Chieftain Main Battle Tank
These are two Chieftains on display at the Land Warfare
Museum located at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, UK. The
Chieftain inside the museum is
painted in the British Army green & black and the tank
has “Chinese Eyes” painted on the turret with
the name “DAKEYNE” painted on the triangle
bin (used for storing the tanks cooking equipment). The
name beginning with ‘D’ and the “Chinese
Eyes” indicate the tank saw service with The 4th Royal
Tank Regiment (Scotland’s Own)
the D coming from D Battalion the Tank Corp in WW 1. The
Chinese eyes as the Chinese Council during WW 1 paid for & presented
a Tank to D Battalion the Tank Corp and the eyes were painted
on as all Chinese ships (the early tanks were referred
to as land ships) have them, so they could see their way
through adversity. [Many thanks to John Watt, Trooper (Retd),
The 4th Royal Tank Regiment (Scotland’s Own), for sharing this
insight!]
