Funny Acres - The Amorous Hare
As I've no-doubt mentioned previously, my wife is a rabbit breeder as
well as a national rabbit judge. In her stock of over 65 rabbits, she
cultivates a number breeds. When a rabbit goes past its prime, she'll
usually turn it loose to hang out in the barn.
When our well-meaning dog wanted to play with some of these loose
bunnies, he would inadvertently scare them to death, but nothing seemed
to work in convincing him to leave the rabbits alone. That is until we
learned of a breed we call the "Big Ass Bunnies". These suckers are over
20 pounds and don't fear very much.
We were given our first Big Ass Bunny and we turned him loose in the
barn with the others. The curious dog went over to sniff the newcomer's
butt and got bit for his troubles. Case closed, the dog has finally
learned.
Recently, Tammy and her helper were distressed to learn that the two
Big Ass Bunnies we currently have in the barn were missing. Tammy was
convinced that someone was helping themselves to our rabbits! Then a
few nights ago, one of the missing rabbits (both are female), appears
on our back door looking in.
Before we could even get to the door to try and catch this bunny, we
realized that we missed a detail - the bunny was courting one of our cats!
Pavel (our indoor/outdoor cat) was standing at the door begging to come
in before the bunny found him. Too late. By the time we did get outside,
both had run off, but while we stood there in amazement, the cat was running
around the house, around the barn, hiding in bushes, and all the while the
amorous bunny was hot on his heels. I rescued the cat, Tammy got the bunny
and put her back in the barn.
The next day, the bunny was out again. It turns out that the two Big
Ass Bunnies had dug a series of tunnels that would make any POW proud
and were coming and going at will. It seems that our indoor/outdoor cat
isn't so hot on the outdoors anymore...
