The folks at Cutting Edge Modelworls continue to turn out great
aftermarket decals with some of the best instructions/color profiles
on the market. In this set, we have two distinctive P-51Ds
of flown by two notable aces.
The two aircraft covered in this set are:
- P-51D-25-NA, 44-72922, 434 FS/479 FG, L2-W, as flown by Major
Robin Olds, 'Scat VII'
- P-51D-5-NA, unkown, 79 FS/20 FG, MC-O, as flown by Capt Jack
M. Ilfrey, 1944, 'Happy Jacks Go Buggy'
Many folks have heard of the famous MiG killer, Colonel Robin
Olds of the 8th TFW flying the F-4 Phantom II over the skies of
Vietnam. Before Olds ever set foot in Southeast Asia, he had already
become a double ace with 13 confirmed aerial kills and 11.5 ground
kills from his tours in the P-51 and P-38 during World War II.
He obtained four MiG kills over Vietnam. You'll see a variety of
kill statistics attributed to Olds, but you can read more of his
history on the USAF
Website here.
This is the first time I've seen Jack Ilfrey's aircraft rendered
in decals though the instructions indicate that this scheme had
been incorrectly attempted before. Nevertheless, Happy Jack's Go
Machine is a rather interesting blend of camo and bare metal, not
to mention the distinctive markings. I feel a Mustang coming on
here...
This set provides a colorful alternative to the kit markings in
the Dragon or Hasegawa P-51D kit and will definitely
look great on the contest table!
Highly recommended!
