Flying Leathernecksis a new brand under Orion Scale Models which is all owned and operated by Dave Roof, USMC, so you'll know he has a passion for the Corps and this latest release is no exception.

F/A-18D F/A-18D

In this set, Flying Leathernecks offers markings for six US Marine Corps F/A-18D Hornets in very contemporary markings (most of them from this year!). The aircraft presented in this set are:

  • F/A-18D, 165413, VMFA(AW)-121, VK/01, MCAS Miramar, CA, 2009
  • F/A-18D, 164699, VMFA(AW)-224, WK/01, MCAS Beaufort, SC, 2009
  • F/A-18D, 165684, VMFA(AW)-225, CE/01, MCAS Miramar, CA, 2009
  • F/A-18D, 165528, VMFA(AW)-242, DT/00, MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, 2009
  • F/A-18D, 164959, VMFA(AW)-332, BM/09, Taszar AB, Hungary, 1999
  • F/A-18D, 164959, VMFA(AW)-553, ED/01, Al Asad AB, Iraq, 2006

The decals are printed by Cartograf and you can see that there are no multi-layered decals that you must overlay to recreate this artwork. Every marking is presented as a single decal and the printing is crisp and in-register. You can see in the images that the large decal sheet provides all of the distinctive markings for all six aircraft as well as complete stenciling for two airframes.

The set also includes a nice reference CD-ROM containing the painting and decal layout instructions in image and Adobe PDF formats as well as photo walk arounds of these subjects so you can accurately replicate the various details on the night attack Hornets.

My sincere thanks to Flying Leathernecks Decals for this review sample!
