First Look

There's a new decal company on the market and they've come with an excellent first offering. This set provides two aircraft from VF-24 'Renegades' circa early 1996. The aircraft are late service F-14A Tomcats with the revised gun door gas vents. This is the configuration recently rendered by Academy's updated F-14A Tomcat kit. The two aircraft presented here are:

F-14A F-14A

  • F-14A-100-GR, 160669, NG/201, VF-24, early 1996, Squadron Commander's aircraft
  • F-14A-100-GR, 160669, NG/201, VF-24, Jul-Aug 1996, Squadron Commander's aircraft
  • F-14A-100-GR, 160689, NG/207, VF-24, early 1996

If you'll note that 160669 is listed there twice. The first time as a normal 'boss bird' with the commander's name on the rear pit and the XO's name up front. In the second instance, Fightertown Decals provides the variation in markings that appeared in the Jul-Aug timeframe with the XO's name replaced up front with Vice Admiral Frost's name.

The color-printed instructions have good notes about the look and weathering of these aircraft as well as their typical loadouts. Just want the AMS modeler is looking for.

The decal printing is crisp and only a few of the markings are printed as two separate decals to ensure proper color and registration on the final product. Since these are Microscale decals, they will go down smooth and trouble-free on a properly prepared (smooth/glossy) surface.

My sincere thanks to Fightertown Decals for this review sample!
