First Look

The latest new decal set from Zotz caters to the new 1/32 P-51B Mustang produced by Trumpeter. This set provides two famous and distinctive aircraft. The color profiles show the proper placement of the early ID stripes that were worn on the wings and horizontal stabs.

P-51B Mustang in the ETO Part 2 P-51B Mustang in the ETO Part 2
  • P-51B-5-NA, 43-6913, 336 FS/4 FG, VF-T, 'Shangri-La', March 1944, as flown by Capt Don Gentile
  • P-51B-5-NA, 43-6315, Commander 356 FS/354 FG, AJ-A, 'Ding Hao!' as flown by Maj James Howard

Howard's aircraft is especially noteworthy not only for his downing of six enemy (German) aircraft on 12 Jan 1944 for which he received the Medal of Honor, his aircraft also wears the six Japanese kill marks from his service with the Flying Tigers prior to the US entry into World War Two.

As you can see, this set will really enhance the appearance of the Trumpeter kit, though these should work on the Revell 1/32 P-51B if you're so inclined. Zotz does recommend visiting Jerry Rutman's site if you need the Malcolm hood for your 'Ding Hao!', but this is optional. Howard's aircraft had the standard folding hood installed until well after his day of six kills, and you'll find several good photos of Howard and 'Ding Hao!' with the twelve kill marks and the standard canopy online. Sometime after becoming a Lt.Col. and his Medal of Honor, his aircraft received the sliding Malcolm hood modification. You'll also see photos of Lt.Col. Howard in his Malcolm hood equipped aircraft, but the photos of 'Ding Hao!' with the kill marks and the standard hood show that you can accurately depict this aircraft with the kit as-is.

My sincere thanks to Zotz Decals for this review sample!
