Zotz just sent out this hot new release - a Japanese Air Self
Defense Force (JASDF) F-4EJ Kai Phantom II wearing a special pre-50th
Anniversary color scheme. The aircraft is wearing its normal tactical
camouflage but superimposed on the port side is a Samurai warrior
about to strike a blue dragon with an AIM-9 whilst on the starboard
side, a black panther is about to pounce on a green dragon. I wish
they'd also use the artwork that is on the cover of this set with
the infamous Phantom II wearing Samurai armor.
The set is presented in 1/48 scale for the Hasegawa F-4EJ kit
as well as this set targeted for Tamiya's big and beautiful 1/32
F-4EJ. In order to render the F-4EJ Kai (Updated) on the Tamiya
kit, Zotz has provided replacement tips for the wing tips and the
top of the vertical stabilizer. These have radar warning receiver
antennas that the 'vanilla' F-4EJs lacked. The instructions show
the additional details to add to the radome as well.
In addition to the three resin parts, the set includes five sheets
of decals. Two sheets are in FULL color with the artwork for the
blue and green dragons as well as for the panther and warrior.
A third sheet has nothing but cloud artwork that is also part of
the overall scheme (there has to be a story here somewhere). The
final two sheets contain the white backgrounds for the color decals.
As usual, the printing and color rendition are very well done.
The color photos on the instructions are a bit dark and will be
a little difficult to interpret, but I scanned the images and lightened
the photo above up to a usable level.
If you are looking for a good way to visit Tamiya in Japan,
this is the decal set to add to that Tamiya 1/32 F-4EJ kit. If
you get the rest of the build and paint done right, you may have
a winner for the next Tamiyacon in LA.
This set is highly recommended!
My sincere thanks to Zotz for
this review sample!
