Zotz continues to turn out some interesting subjects and schemes that you won't find from any other decal manufacturer, and this set is no exception! This latest from Zotz is a reissue of an early sheet that covers some interesting Lockheed PV-1 Venturas in USN and New Zealand service during WW2. This sheet was originally usable with the FM or Koster Aero kits, but this reissue precedes the 1/48th scale PV-1 Ventura kit announced by Revell/Germany.
Markings for seven aircraft are provided, each with distinctive 'nose' art (sometimes not located on the nose) and two with an octopus painted around the dorsal turret. The aircraft profiled here include:
- PV-1, NZ4613, Whenuapai, April 1944
- PV-1, NZ4525, 2 (BR) Sqn, Ohakea AB, September 1943
- PV-1, BuNo 34741, VB-144, Tarawa/Roi-Namur, 1944
- PV-1, NZ4540, 2 (BR) Sqn, Guadalcanal, March 1944
- PV-1, unk, VPB-150, Tinian, 1945
- PV-1, BuNo 488901, VB-135, Attu, 1944
- PV-1, unk, VPB-133, Iwo Jima, 1944
As with the previous releases, there is a full-color instruction sheet and color references to replicate the tri-color schemes worn by the aircraft. In addition to the nice noseart, complete national markings and identification numbers are provided to complete your project.
The decals themselves are very vibrant with color and very much in register. I run my finger over the decal paper and noticed that Eli's printing house did not skimp at all on the amount of pigment they used!
My sincere thanks to Zotz Decals for this review sample!
