Cobra Company has released, or perhaps re-release
is more accurate, a set of short-nozzled J79 engines for virtually
any 1/48 scale early J79-powered aircraft. These molds (if
I recall correctly) were previously part of the High Flight
line, which I invested quite a bit in to support my Phantom
Phleet. These appear to be the same nozzles and afterburner
chambers produced under that label and this time, Cobra Company
has provided four complete sets in this release.
This is one of the simplest resin sets I can recall every
using - simply file the back off of the nozzle casting, paint
the nozzle and afterburner chamber, glue the nozzle to the
chamber, and replace the corresponding parts in the Hasegawa
Phantom kits. These can be adapted to work with virtually any
1/48 F-4 kit on the market. The specific aircraft
models that were powered by the long-nozzled J79s include:
- B-58 Hustler
- F-4E Phantom II
- F-4EJ Phantom II
- F-4F Phantom II
- F-4G Phantom II
- F-4J Phantom II
- F-4S Phantom II
- RF-4E Phantom II
Note that with the exception of the F-4J(UK) Phantoms acquired
after the Falklands/Malvinas war, all British Phantoms were
Rolls Royce Spey powered and those nozzles look completely
different than these J79 nozzles, so don't plan on using this
set with your Brit Phantom.
With four complete sets, you can upgrade two Phantom kits
or one Monogram B-58 Hustler kit..
