While a beautiful kit straight from the box, the Hasegawa 1/48
F6F-5 Hellcat kit suffers from an incorrect cowling around the lower
intake scoops. In the picture above, the kit cowling is on the
left, and you can clearly see the 'shallow lips' compared to the
other two F6F cowlings. The cowling on the right is from another
aftermarket company and has the correct shape intakes, but the
vanes dividing the intakes are not correctly shaped and detailed
(something that Hasegawa did get right in their cowling). The
cowling in the center is the new Cutting Edge replacement and
it has the accurate vanes of the original kit along with the accurate
'lip profile' of the F6F and nicely captured by the cowling on
the right.
In
addition, the Cutting Edge cowling is the only one of the lot
that poses the cowl flaps in the open position. This is a nicely
done correction for the Hasegawa kit and is even worth installing
on your Hellcat, even if it is already built!
My sincere thanks to Meteor Productions
for this review sample!
