White Ensign Models continues to turn out some very interesting
detail sets in their 1/350 scale range. Their photo-etch detail
sets add levels of detail and fidelity to a variety of ship
subjects, and this release is definitely no exception!
This set is designed for the Trumpeter 1/350 USS Nimitz (CVN
68) kit which was released in its 1975 configuration. This
detail set picks up where Trumpeter left off and replaces the
radar antennas from solid plastic to realistic-looking photo-etch.
The communications
and sensor masts are also replaced with photo-etch, and upon
these the proper look of the unique antennas are added. Pay
attention to the instructions as some of these options were
fitted later in the Nimitz's career or on the USS Eisenhower
(CVN 69).
The signature radar mast that was mounted aft of the superstructure
is provided in the initial version, the updated version (that
later collapsed), and the Ike version.
One significant detail missing in the Trumpeter kit is the
Landing Signals Officer (LSO) platform on the port side of
the rear deck. Once again, WEM to the rescue!
In addition to the nice array of antennas, this set also provides
a complete set of railing, safety nets, ladders, and even deck
vehicle details.
Just when you thought you couldn't find any greater detail
in 1/350 scale, White Ensign Models has come alongside with
their latest creations. This set is a must-have for the Trumpeter
kit! Check out the companion
set that updates the Nimitz kit
to later Nimitz-class carriers.
Definitely recommended for advanced ship builders!
My sincere thanks to White
Ensign Models for this review sample!
