Background
AMT/ERTL has been turning out cool car subjects for many years
now, many subjects of which have not been produced by other
car kit manufacturers.
The 1962 Chevrolet Corvette is no exception. This stylish
road machine featured a style that was short-lived. Its clean
lines, large hood area and a two-place cockpit spoke volumes
about speed and performance.
The Kit
This kit has been around for a little while and retains many
of the original options (including blower, alternative grille,
wheels, and more). In this release, the car features new-tooled
wheels and low-profile tires. Under the banner of Boyd Coddington's
'American Hotrod' series on the Discovery Channel, the car
kit is dressed up with new custom wheels to match the low-profile
tires. Unfortunately, the original tires were not retained
in this release, so if you're wanting to model a stock '62
Vette, you'll need to hit your spares box.
The kit is cast in white styrene. The detailing on the kit
is buildable out the box by junior modelers and can be easily
tailored by any experienced modeler.
Three trees of parts are provided that are pre-chromed. The
chroming on the two new-tooled parts is nicely done and should
produce a great look. The original chrome parts tree has the
appearance of having a bit too much chrome on the parts of
my example.
One thing that I wish all car kit producers would consider
is that if they must chrome a parts tree to appeal to the fledgling
modeler, that they would add a duplicate tree in the kit without
chrome to save the more experienced modeler the time and hassle
of removing said chrome.
Conclusions
This reissue is a still a nice kit and coupled with the Boyd
Coddington wheels and low profile wheels, you'll add a contemporary
custom look to your classic kit. This kit is recommended!
My sincere thanks to RC2 for this review sample!
