Background
While the Germans were the first to field an operational jet fighter,
it was in the early 1950s during the Korean War that another
jet fighter would appear on the scene that would transform aerial
combat forever - the Mikoyan MiG-15. This was a light, agile, and
heavily armed gun fighter that forced US airpower to push the development
of their own fighters to counter this new threat. From those days
over Korea to present time, it doesn't really matter what kind
of enemy fighter is spotted in combat, over the air the call is
still "MiGs!".
While the USAF would eventually attain a reasonable kill/loss
ratio over Korea, that ratio was nothing like the kill ratios experienced
during World War 2. This was partly due to Soviet fighter pilots
flying the North Korea MiGs. On more than one ocassion did an allied
fighter pilot spot a blonde-haired pilot ejecting from a crippled
MiG. The MiG-15 would find its way into many air forces around
the world and would prove a deadly adversary in the right hands.
The Kit
The Attack Hobby Kits' 1/144 MiG-15 kit is molded in
light gray styrene and features some beautifully cast details throughout
the kit. While not a complex kit, it will become quickly obvious
just how much detail is present once the completed model has been
weathered.
As with the full-scale aircraft, the kit offers only an optional
set of external fuel tanks for underwing stores.
Despite its petite
scale though, this kit features some nice details that will look
great after assembly. This should be quick and painless
with the majority of time will be spent cleaning up the tree attachment
points, and these are minimal.
Markings are provided for five examples:
- MiG-15, 3137, Czechoslovakian Air Force
- MiG-15, 317, Soviet Air Force
- MiG-15, 46, East German Air Force
- MiG-15, 616, USAF (evaluation aircraft obtained from a North
Korean defector)
- MiG-15, 1032, North Korean Air Force
Conclusion
This is a nice little kit that will go together quickly. By the
way, did you notice the retail price (from Hobbyshop.cz)?
You can't beat these prices. Recommended!
My sincere thanks to Hobbyshop.cz for
