The German Army understood the need for safety in the transportation
and storage of ammunition in the field. To get supplies to the
troops, a variety of ammunition trailers were developed to be towed
behind tactical utility vehicles like the Kubelwagen.
One such trailer was the Sd.Anh.51 which was an ammo carrier box
that mounted to a trailer using shock absorbers to protect the
contents (and the poor chaps towing those contents.
The Kit
Italeri has released the Sd.Anhanger 51 trailer in styrene! I've
seen this kit rendered previously in resin, but I believe this
is the first time we've seen the subject in plastic.
Molded in light gray styrene, the kit is presented on two parts
trees. Four trees are included in the box as Italeri provides two
complete trailers in this release.
Assembly is straightforward, with the ammo box going together
first. A facade top (part 1) is provided to replicate the contents
of the trailer, but you can eliminate this part and load up the
trailer with your own loadout. The trailer top can be positioned
up or closed. Pioneering tools are provided for the top and front
of the ammo box.
The two-wheel trailer frame is next and it comes complete with
its own stowage box, tail lights, and hitch fixture. The box and
wheels mount onto the frame to complete the project.
Conclusion
As simple as this trailer might seem, you can see that this two-wheeled
ammo trailer is quite detailed and would make a good centerpiece
for a figure diorama or look great behind a Kubelwagen or Horch.
In any case, this is one detail that is a complete kit of its own
and will add a nice touch to your next Wehrmacht project.
Definitely recommended!
My sincere thanks to Testors and
the DLV Company for this review sample!
