Background
General Motors was deeply involved with the acquisition and modernization
of vehicle production in the 1920s, including the manufacturing facilities
of Opel AG in Russelsheim, Germany. From this factory came one of Germany's
most versatile support vehicles, the Opel Blitz.
The 3-Ton Opel Blitz would become one of the most widely used vehicles in
its class by the Werhmacht, not only as a utility truck, but as a mobile
repair shop, mobile radio unit, ambulance, etc. One such application was
as a fuel truck to keep the Wehrmacht's thirsty vehicles moving.
The Kit
The kit is molded on three trees of tan styrene plus
a small fret of photo-etched parts included for handles, ladders and
hood grilles. Specifically, this kit represents the three-ton Opel
Blitz Type 3.6 6700A with the provisional cab and a fuel support equipment
mounted behind the cab.
Assembly begins with a nicely detailed cab, with the stick shift and brake
lever provided as photo-etch. The cab assembly mounts to the hood/front end,
all of which then mounts to the chassis. The fuel tank, hose storage compartments,
etc., comes together next.
Once the cab and fuel tank are mounted to the chassis, the photo-etched access ladders, tool
bins and other details are finally added to the model.
Markings are provided for two examples: a fuel truck assigned to the 21st Panzer Division,
DAK, 1942 or one assigned to the 1st Staffel NJG.1 'Munster' in the Autumn of 1942.
Conclusions
This is yet another interesting support vehicle for your collection. If you've been wanting
to build a 1/72 vignette of your favorite DAK tank or Luftwaffe aircraft getting refueled, then this
is the kit you've been waiting for. You can get this kit from your favorite hobby retailer or directly
from Squadron Mail Order.
My sincere thanks to Squadron Mail
