Can you remember those Saturday mornings in the ‘60’s
before Madison Avenue figured out how to really exploit children?
Hours of great animated shows with all kinds of heroes and
villains! One of those programs was based on the great sci-fi
inner space movie, Fantastic Voyage.Bearing the same
name, the animated series chronicled the adventures of the
Combined Miniature Defense Force.
In the remarkable Voyager,
designed by nerdy engineer Busby Birdwell, the CMDF flew missions
that required a microscopic foot print to protect us all from
evil. The rest of the team was Captain Jonathan Kidd, the lovely
Erica Lane and the mysterious Dr. Guru. You can capture even
more of those memories by watching some of the episodes posted here.
Yes, we really used to watch stuff like this! I long for that
simpler time! But I digress…
This is basically a reissue of the kit that was originally
marketed back in the late ‘60’s. The kit comes
in a retro inspired box with all the trees thoughtfully bagged
separately.
The box art is a picture of the finished kit in
a microscopic looking background, just like the kit from back
in the day! Cleanly injected in white styrene the ship and
crew are presented in 34 pieces including the interior, clear
parts and the stand with its single decal. The instrument panels
and chairs are included for all four crew members along with
figures in their likenesses.
The interior includes the forward control room and the room
behind it along with Busby’s dome covered turret, chair
and control panel. A painting reference is included with the
instructions giving basic color names and the parts or areas
that get painted.
Accurate color references can be gleaned from the videos at
the link above. The fit is good with only minor filling needed
to bring the finished model up to our adult standards. (I don’t
remember that being an issue when I built my first one almost
40 years ago. Do you ever get the feeling that we lost something?)
This model will not appeal to everyone. But if you still have
an inner child and remember things for back in the day, the
Moebius Voyager will be a real treat!
Another nice thing about
the kit, at least in my mind, is that it lacks what most would
call historical value. That means there aren’t those
heavy expectations about accuracy. You can just sit back and
enjoy the build and the finished model! You, too, can save
America from evil and go on the next mission with the CMDF!
Definitely recommended!
