The Kit
First released in 1998 in stock form,
this version of the kit comes with custom wheels and some interesting
looking sticker type decals. This snap-tite format kit contains
39 parts, molded in orange (1), clear (3), and black (23). 8
chrome pieces, 4 vinyl tires, 2 metal axels and screws round out
the parts for this offering.
Engine: None – this is a curbside kit.
Chassis: 5 pieces make up the chassis assembly – 4
springs and the chassis plate itself. Nice engraving here,
with molded representations of the engine, transfer case, exhaust
and muffler as well as the drive shafts. Some careful detail
painting and dry brushing here will create a lot of realism.
Wheels and tires: 3 pieces make up each assembly – a
wheel, tire and chrome disk brake rotor. The wheels themselves
are an incredible scale 27” in diameter! Tires are
a no-name rubber-style tire (serious bling here!). The only
nit I have here is the size of the disk brake rotors – they
are the stock size rotors, and really get lost behind the jumbo
tires and wheels. To complete the look you may want to replace
with some spares from the parts box. The original
wheels and wheel backs are also included, but not the stock tires.
An interesting version would be to add some Aoshima aftermarket
mudder tires to make a serious off roader out of this kit.
Interior: 7 pieces make up the interior – 4
bucket seats, the dashboard, steering wheel & interior bucket
itself. Nice engraving on the floor and seats as well as
on the dashboard. Careful detail painting will create a nice
effect here as well.
Body: Very nice! Excellent engraving
again from Revell (as usual) with nice door hinge and hood top
vent detail. Rivets abound all over the back and sides and
the simulated canvas top is very convincing. 2 headlights,
1 pc windshield and the one piece body make up this assembly.
Decals: Since this kit is a snap kit the decals
are peel and stick – perfect for the young builders. These
include simulated side pipes, decals for the seat backs, tail lights
and a decal representing 4 huge speaks (more bling!) The
decals are sharply printed are well registered.
Conclusion
Overall a very nice kit, and should be a hit with kids as well
as adults looking for a unique subject. Kits like this give
the experienced builder an opportunity to try new techniques and
ideas, as well as a chance to improve basic skills like detail
painting and weathering. As is usual for Revell, clean
molding & crisp engraving are abundant on this kit. Highly
recommended.
Many thanks to Revell-Monogram
