IPMS Fort Worth Scale Modelers SuperCon 2015 Show Report
Friday night I spent the night sorting out kits for the vendor table and packing up a few models for the show until 2:00 a.m. Then off to bed for a short nap and a rather nasty alarm clock angrily barking at me at 5:00 a.m. Up and about, cup of coffee, load up the truck and head over to a co-conspirators house that has a covered truck bed to ward off any surprise showers that pop up this time of the year in this area. By 6:15 a.m. we are on the road and heading off to one of my favorite shows of the season. The Fort Worth IPMS SuperCon! This IPMS chapter puts on one of the best shows of the season. It is always held around my September 11 birthday so it is a double treat to go to this show with a little spending money! I am sure the Fort Worth IPMS club doesn't mind my presence. The crew is lively and very cordial to all who enter their doors. I was greeted by many from the club and engaged in great conversation right from the beginning.
We set up the vendors table within minutes. Carts were available. Loading and unloading was easy and tables were plentiful and well set up. Flow in and out of the vendor's area was easy once all the contestants got through the signup process. There just isn't a better way to separate those two areas. Sign in and placement was easy and the positive attitude the volunteers rubbed off on me all day. I can't say enough about the Fort Worth crew.
There were plenty of tables and lighting is about as good as it gets. The tables were set out with enough walking room, plenty of space for categories and it was easy to find your assigned category. After getting my models out on the table I turned my attention to getting my vendors table set up and started doing a little business. One of my favorite parts of the show, talking to old friends and chatting with new ones. (I miss our own "Bondo" Phil Brandt, as we all do.) I had a great time talking to the usual suspects and exchanging information. Soon I was sold out of inventory and got to visit other vendors while picking up some great deals.
A glance at the raffle ticket board got my attention with a winning ticket. The raffle had a great selection of kits and books to choose from. I found a 1/48 E-2C decal sheet that fit a future project perfectly. A quick lunch with some friends was in order and then back to the contest. I was talking with a friend when I heard my name called for 1/48 Axis Single Seat category. First Place! That was just some incredible icing on the cake for this trip. I really brought just four kits to give a little bit back to Fort Worth IPMS for supporting us when we held our shows. To win a first in such a tough category was a very nice cap to a really great day.
The awards time was well organized and quickly presented. The comic relief by the presenters was very welcomed and put everyone in a good mood after a long day. Well it was time to pack up and get going back to Abilene. What a great day and what a great club. I will be a super fan of SuperCon for a long time coming. Thank you guys and gals for a great day and I look forward to next year already!
