Anigrand Craftswork 1/72 Firefox Photo Feature

By Chuck Holte

Photo Feature

One of the cool scenes from the 1982 Clint Eastwood movie Firefox was the fleeing aircraft landing on the Arctic icepack for a much needed refueling from a surfaced submarine, call sign Mother One, while the pursuing Soviet forces closed in. This diorama is my version of that scene in 1/72 scale using the Anigrand Firefox kit and the sail portion from the recently released Moebius USS Skipjack.  I also used a few figures from the spares box, an 11x14 inch sheet of styrofoam, an inverted plastic frame of the same 11x14 size and some Woodland Scenics snow products.

The Firefox kit was built out of the box except for some minor open cockpit detailing (instrument decals and tape seatbelts).  The Skipjack underwent surgery as I opened and detailed the crew compartment on the upper portion of the sail.  A seaman lookout with binoculars was stationed in the newly opened compartment while the Captain has a few parting words with the helmeted Major Gant (Eastwood) on the ice next to the aircraft. It was fun to watch the Firefox DVD again while building the diorama and trying to capture a small bit of that drama in the scene I was modeling.  Model on!
