First Look

Afterburner Decals continues to turn out some impressive decal releases covering contemporary US subjects and this latest set is no exception. Just in time for the recent re-releases of Hasegawa's 1/48 F-4S Phantom II kits, this set provides a nice cross-section of color and marking styles used by the VF-161 Chargers during their time with the Sierra Phantom.

F-4S F-4S

This decal set provides five examples of the F-4S colors with the commander's aircraft, the executive officer's (XO) aircraft, and three line aircraft, each with a different variation of the low-visibility markings used by the squadron.

The examples presented here include:

  • F-4S, 153881, VF-161, NF/101, USS Midway, 1986, CO's aircraft
  • F-4S, 153840, VF-161, NF/102, USS Midway, 1982, XO's aircraft
  • F-4S, 155746, VF-161, NF/105, USS Midway, 1983
  • F-4S, 155570, VF-161, NF/111, USS Midway, 1986
  • F-4S, 155840, VF-161, NF/113, USS Midway, 1981

This decal set provides you with the sufficient stencils and markings to replicate two of these aircraft. If you look over the decal sheets, you can see that the set provides national markings, stencils, walkways, and formation (slime) lights.

This is a great set which will definitely enhance the look of my F-4S project and will definitely be worth acquiring for your own.

My sincere thanks to Afterburner Decals for this review sample!
