First Look

Furball Aero-Design continues its collaboration with Detail & Scale and their fourth release covers a cross-section of sea blue F9F-8s in US Navy line service. This set provides markings for eleven different aircraft from ten different squadrons and seven different aircraft carriers. This nice service cross-section provides a nice variety of unit colors to select from for your Kitty Hawk 1/48 F9F-8 Cougar kit. Once you see this set, you might want to buid several.

The eleven subjects in this set include:

  • F9F-8, 131095, VF-13, ATG/301, USS Bennington, 1957
  • F9F-8, 138892, VF-32, K/201, USS Ticonderoga, 1955
  • F9F-8, 141092, VF-61, E/00, USS Intrepid, 1956
  • F9F-8, 141101, VF-61, E/205, USS Intrepid, 1956
  • F9F-8, 131167, VF-74, C/410, USS Essex, 1957
  • F9F-8, 141068, VF-81, O/111, USS Lake Champlain, 1956
  • F9F-8, 131203, VF-93, N/309, USS Oriskany, 1956
  • F9F-8, 141073, VF-112, V/213, USS Essex, 1957
  • F9F-8B, 139983, VA-113, V/309, USS Essex, 1957
  • F9F-8, 131197, VF-122, D/210, USS Shangri-La, 1956
  • F9F-8, 138830, VA-126, NJ/05, NAS Miramar, 1957

The sheet is printed by Cartograf and the printing is very well done. What's more, none of these decals require the modeler to stack multiple layers of markings atop one another to recreate artwork. This trend by some decal companies of producing multiple-layer decals is unfortunate as it puts the burden on you to do the work of what should have been done by the decal maker.

My sincere thanks to Furball Aero-Design/Detail & Scale for this review sample!
