White Ensign Models continues to expand its product lines into broader areas and this detail set is no exception. This time, they've released this set of Mk.14 torpedos for Revell's 1/72 USS Gato-class submarine.
You'll recall that the US Navy had severe reliability problems with one of their submarine torpedoes during World War II with many Japanese vessels getting pelted with duds. It took the US Navy far longer that you'd expect to even acknowledge the problem much less correct it, but eventually the Mk.14 was sorted out and was racking up kills towards the end of the war.
Well you've guessed it, this is that very torpedo. Weighing in at over 3200 pounds, this torpedo was standard armament for US Navy submarines during the war, but its development dates back to 1931. There are a number of interesting discussions about this particular weapon online for those interested in its teething problems.
This set provides a pair of Mk.14s with its fins and propeller replicated in photo-etch. These would be handy to have on deck to depict a reloading of your Gato-class submarine.
The instructions provide good references for parts assembly and placement.
If you're looking to render one of the many variations in the Gato/Balao class submarines, this set will add additional flavor to your display.
My sincere thanks to White Ensign Models for this review sample!
