When Zvezda first announced a new-tool Su-25 Frogfoot last year, many folks were excited as the market needed a decent Frogfoot kit. That kit became available in the early months of 2022, but the kit of course was in 1/72 scale. As the 1/72 scale kit did become available in Russia, Zvezda announced that there wouild be a 1/48 scale kit coming in the springtime. Then the invasion of Ukraine happened and Zvezda kits became progressively more difficult to find. Late last month, I found a hobby shop in Latvia that had the 1/48 scale kit available and I placed an order. The results were quite impressive as the kit arrived quickly from Eastern Europe and didn't have any damage to the packaging.

The kit is molded in light gray styrene and presented on 14 parts trees (duplicate trees not shown) plus one tree of clear parts.

Among the features and options in this kit:

  • Assembles into two versions: gear up or gear down
  • Nicely detailed K-36D ejection seat
  • Optional seated pilot included
  • Few raised details inside cockpit (uses decals for detailing)
  • Intake ducts down to compressor faces
  • Positionable canopy
  • Positionable elevators
  • Positionable rudder
  • Positionable wingtip speed brakes
  • Positionable landing gear
  • Optional boarding ladder
  • Optional wheel chocks
  • Optional display stand

A nice selection of external stores include:

  • 2 x R-60 (AA-8 Aphid)
  • 4 x smaller caliber rocket pods
  • 4 x larger caliber rocket pods
  • 4 x bombs
  • 4 x cluster munitions
  • 2 x external fuel tanks

Markings are provided for six examples:

  • Su-25, bort 50, Afghanistan, 1986
  • Su-25, bort 26, Afghanistan, 1987
  • Su-25, bort 10, North Caucasus, 2000
  • Su-25, bort 32, Tajikistan, 2004
  • Su-25K, 1004, Czech Republic, 1988
  • Su-25K, bort 748, Bulgarian AF, 2020

This is a nice looking kit which should build into a nice model of the classic Frogfoot. For those who wish to add that extra detailing to the cockpit, Quinta Studio produces a set for this kit which should really set off the front office. I don't know what the availability of this kit will be within the US, but you can shop on eBay as I did to get your own copy of this kit.
